Why Puzzles are good for the Brain
One way in which humans differ from other species is that we have a sense of future and are able to predict outcomes to enable delayed gratification. The frontal lobe of the brain is in charge of this function.
In several disorders such as addiction and depression the frontal lobe can become inhibited and so impulsive behaviours and poor social control are often exhibited.
Strengthening the frontal lobes improves our ability to refuse to succumb to emotionally driven behaviours.
Puzzles such as Brain String and Cross teaser are a great way to train the frontal lobes and reinforce their function.
Brainstring® is today’s most fascinating 3D puzzle.
Based on a unique concept, Brainstring® calls for a new way of thinking. Combine intuition with structured thought and experience the fun of unimaginable possibilities.
Unique design and a well-thought-out play element. That’s the combination that makes Brainstring a popular and absorbing new game for young and old. Partly because of the unending possibilities, many players already call Brainstring a mathematical masterpiece. The development of Brainstring took nearly ten years, in which innovation after innovation resulted in this ingenious product. A transparent cube and the twelve strings inside are the main ingredients for enjoyable and exciting mental gymnastics
By nature, man likes to unravel knots.
Any string inside Brainstring can be moved without creating a knot. It sounds impossible, because it’s exactly the movement of a string that creates a knot, after all. Embodied in this contradiction is the mystery and surprising aspect of Brainstring.
Using an ingenious pattern of incisions the strings can be moved through the cube. The result: complex knots appear on the inside. The main goal of the game is to switch the outside button colors, without creating a knot inside. It seems impossible but…..
How to play
•Basic play
Any string is interchangeable with another, so Brainstring offers many possibilities for play. All imaginable colour combinations can be made, with two, three or four of the same colours on each part of the cube. BUT –remember! – you have to do it without creating a knot.
Here’s a tip. Try sometime to make an unknottable knot for a friend!
Create a mind-boggling knot of your own and become world-famous!.
• Symmetrical patterns. Brainstring provides unending possibilities for creating intriguing symmetrical knots and patterns yourself. It is possible, for example, to achieve the same final visual result (untangled lines) without any of the strings being straight. The strings log onto each other at an angle of 90 degrees. With this first symmetrical knot– ‘Roger’s knot’, named after the son of the inventor – the inventor challenges users to come up with new symmetrical patterns. The reward? Immortality. Each new pattern will be named after the person who conceives it.
If you have discovered a new pattern yourself, you can give it your own name. Mail your pattern (with photo or drawing and description) to info@recenttoys.com, or send it to Recent Toys Int., Kloveniersburgwal 103, 1011 KB Amsterdam (Europe). If the pattern does not yet exist elsewhere, your name will be linked to it worldwide. Don’t forget to state the name of your submission (e.g.. Dave’s Knot or Andrea’s Pattern).
